So over the past few years, the Wu-Tang Clan have been secretly recording a 31 track double album titled Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. Most of the album is produced by Moroccan producer, Cilvaringz (Tarik Azzougarh). The album will soon sit within an engraved silver-and-nickel box, handcrafted over the course of three months by British-Moroccan artist Yahya. What makes this album so different from anything else ever is that there will only be one copy. Yes, just one copy of the album is going to be sold. This idea may seem crazy in this day in age of music, but it could also be genius.

In a recent interview with Forbes, RZA says, “We’re about to sell an album like nobody else sold it before…We’re about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of [modern] music. We’re making a single-sale collector’s item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king.” The plan is to have the album go on a museum tour where listeners can pay an entrance fee to the exhibit and hear the album in full. They’re planning to charge within the $30-50 range for an entrance fee, and people will be searched thoroughly to assure no recording devices make it through security. After this tour the album will go up for auction where it is expected to be sold for millions.

“The idea that music is art has been something we advocated for years,” says RZA. “And yet its doesn’t receive the same treatment as art in the sense of the value of what it is, especially nowadays when it’s been devalued and diminished to almost the point that it has to be given away for free.”

This is going to be something that hopefully changes the way people look at music as an art form. It takes a lot of creativity and devotion of time for these artists to make their albums and such. We do call them “artists” don’t we? So why don’t we treat music like we do art. People these days are always trying to cheat the system and find a way to illegally download music. I think this is a brave and bold statement that Wu-Tang is making, and I hope it works the way they want it to.
