What Jean-Michel created over a century ago has inspired and influenced our generation as if he had never left. The mark he left on this world aside from being a phenomenal artist was being an extraordinary human being. His struggle was real and his pain authenticated his art. The American dream. The dream that we can be a homeless drug addict sleeping in a park in Manhattan and wake up a multi millionaire. Basquiat embodied the soul and spirit of the streets. He had a way of making the ghetto tangible. Taking history and language and combining them into his own unique form of expression. His personal appearance always fascinated me mostly because he always looked like he could give 3 fucks about anyone’s opinion. I have the upmost respect for people who express themselves and Jean Michel past art has always done just that. He was Art. His life was Art. The way he spoke was Art. People confuse Art to be paint on a canvas. A true artist is Art himself.
